Damon Schopen, Founder of Port Light Technology & Co-Founder of FOCUS Coworking
Twelve years ago, I started a web design and development business—just me, a laptop, and a lot of ambition. Like many entrepreneurs, I began working from home. At first, it was exciting. But after a couple of years, the isolation started to wear on me. I missed being around people, sharing ideas, and simply having real-life interactions that don’t involve a screen.
That’s when I discovered coworking—and everything changed.
Finding My First Coworking Home
I joined 100state in Madison after realizing I needed more than just a desk—I needed community. Almost instantly, I felt the energy shift. I was surrounded by creatives, founders, freelancers, and problem-solvers. Not only did I gain a professional space to work from, but I also formed lasting friendships, built a strong referral network, and even landed new clients. I was a member for about six years, and to this day, I still receive referrals from people I met there.
Coworking wasn’t just helpful—it was transformative.
Bringing Coworking to Jefferson, WI
A few years later, I helped launch FOCUS Coworking in Jefferson with a group of friends and local entrepreneurs. Our vision was simple: create a space where small-town professionals could connect, collaborate, and grow—without having to drive to a bigger city.
Even though Jefferson County has a different vibe than Madison, the magic of coworking is still the same. The community we’ve built has helped me continue to grow my business. Through casual conversations and intentional events, I’ve made meaningful connections and closed new deals. We even run a mastermind group that helps members set goals, stay accountable, and support each other—something I know I wouldn’t get working alone at home or from a coffee shop.
Starting Fresh in Minneapolis
Recently, I started splitting my time between Jefferson and Minneapolis. What’s the first thing I did when I landed in a new city? I found a coworking space. Again, I was welcomed into a vibrant community and immediately began building connections. I know it’s only a matter of time before those relationships turn into opportunities.
The Real Secret to Coworking
Coworking spaces give you a desk, sure—but the real value is in the people. Whether you’re chatting over coffee, attending an event, or simply saying hello in the hallway, those small interactions can lead to big opportunities.
So if you’re a coworking member, I encourage you to go beyond the workspace. Show up. Say hi. Be open. Everyone’s there for the same reason—to do good work and to connect.
And if you’ve never tried coworking before, maybe now’s the time. It might just be the thing that takes your business—or your mindset—to the next level.
Here’s to your success,
Damon
